A sketch sheet I did for Onyx at Further Confusion 2010. He provided me with this scan.
This character was fun. At first I started drawing him as a badass typical griff, but as Onyx began elaborating more on his personality, I shifted focus to emphasize the more innocent and playful aspects of his character. It became more stylized and a little baby-faced, like a cartoon kittten. 'Cept with a beak
Very fun to draw, I love avians (birds, dinosaurs, fantasy etc) and don't get enough commissions for these guys. It was nice to "play" with one on this page.
Highlighter, pen and marker on a page-sized piece of bristol paper.

I had a book with a gryphon similar to this when I was a kid...
There was a dove who's babies had grown up and flown away, and she was all depressed and emo and stuff until she found an egg left all alone one day and decided to adopt it. Turns out it's a gryff for some reason and she raises him like a bird, except all the other birds hate him and he feels rejected so leaves... but then he comes back and saves all the other birds when the wolves attack and then they all like him.
...I wish I could remember what it was called, because I freakin' loved that book but I think my parents gave it away at some point.
