Shark tales was maybe a bad movie, but Dreamworks had a lot of goods movies too.
I prefer even Dreamworks good movies to Disney piwar (seriously, why did the leave all good moment like lion king to do fast and strange movies in 3D? Where's the good old deserved animation, that was worked not ONLY with computer?
Dreamworks have done some movies in 2D. And, when they was under another name, they did the great Balto.
So, dreamworks may be not perfect, but personally I still prefer it than Pixar.
*reads an article on the subject* Well Amblimation made Balto, which Speilberg produced, the same man who co-founded Dreamworks. But I wouldn't call that a Dreamworks movie any more than I'd call American Tail a Disney movie just because Bluth (a former Disney animator) made it.
Bad design choices combined with an insufferable main character that distracts from what otherwise could be a decent parody and send up to mafia films (picture Shark Tale WITHOUT Will Smith). It's basically what Lindsay said: Dreamworks is best when its parodies are done with love, not 4th wall breaking nudge-nudge wink-wink recognize this reference! jokes.
Make that downright horrifying character designs. I recall a very memorable review where the critic, upon seeing Angelina Jolie as a "sexy" Lionfish-woman and Christina Agulera as a "sexy" anthropomorphic Portuguese Man-O-War, cried out, "My penis doesn't know what to do!!!"
That and the ads promised all the wonder and magic of LOL, Will Smith is a FISH* and he QUOTES LINES FROM OTHER MOVIES!!!
* - More specifically, he looks like a Wrasse. Which is unintentionally hilarious for multiple reasons. All of which are based upon the... unusual reproductive behavior of these particular fishies.
